TAKE ME AS I AM1月5日 一年前写的文章An Inner Mongolian Childhood: A Piece of Peace
by Christian Yang
I always believe that one’s life experience can be told from the places he has roamed and the place he calls home. Although I’m only 23 years old, I have been to several different provinces and many different cities in China. Of course, these journeys are filled to the brim with excitement and curiosity, but what I cherish most is the place of my roots, the place that I called home first.
Tianjin is my hometown and the city in which I’ve spent most of my life. However, my magical childhood was experienced in a very small town in Inner Mongolia. Close to the city of Tongliao, the village of Dalin is the treasure box which contains many of my boyhood memories.
To begin the story, I should tell you something about my parents. My father is a Tianjin native. He was a middle school student when the Cultural Revolution started. During that time, Chairman Mao insisted that young intellectuals in the cities go to the countryside to be reeducated by the peasants. Therefore, at the end of the Cultural Revolution, a lot of young students of my father’s generation were sent to the countryside all over China.
In August 1968, my father came to the village where my mother lived. It is a very small village, named Qianjin, belonging to the city of Tongliao. Through a friend’s introduction, my father got to know my mother. They fell in love and got married in 1978. In 1985, I and my twin brother were born. We spent the first 6 years of our lives in the village of Dalin. Later, because of change in policy, my family was able to come back to Tianjin in 1991, when I was only 7 years old.
My memories of the life in that small village have been vague and remote. In my recollection, there weren’t any tall buildings, street lamps and even no tap water in the village. Instead of smooth blacktop, pot-holed and dusty dirt roads made up the byways. The wind was so strong in spring and autumn that people could hardly keep their eyes open or keep themselves standing, let alone walk. I remember that one time, my father went to the kindergarten to pick me and my brother up after work. He rode us home by bicycle, with me on the back seat and my brother on the front bar. The wind was so strong that my father’s bicycle collapsed in the heavy gusts, hurling my brother and me into the river by the side of road. Soaked, muddy, and cold, we hopped back on the bike as if nothing had happened at all.
Although the climate and living conditions were not very favorable, the memories I collected there were sparkling diamonds. The big yard in front our house shined the brightest as my favorite hangout. My parents planted various types of vegetables in the yard and it became lush green in summer. Moreover, we raised some roosters and ducks in our yard. Early mornings began with the familiar crow of the rooster. Sounds such as these vanished upon our family’s move to Tianjin, and this special slice of peaceful village life is what I miss most.
This unmatchable peace was also embodied in the woods not far from my home. I remember digging for worms there with my friends in the embrace of giant poplars. Every Fall, they would shed their brilliant colors, weeping autumn’s tears that glistened in the harvest sun. Winter’s whispers soon hushed that bare-branched forest to sleep, as pigeons scampered on fresh beds of velvet powder; they disappeared in blankets upon blankets of clean snow.
I graduated from college last year. It was the culmination of my growing up years in Tianjin. I have witnessed the tremendous growth in this ever-changing city. As I continue to mature, keeping pace with newly raised skyscrapers and the hustle and bustle of a modernizing Tianjin, my mind never fails to drift to a small and remote village in Northeastern China.

by Christian Yang
In the modern history of China, Tianjin has always been a city of great importance. In the past, it was a military stronghold, providing coastal defense for the country. Today, it continues to maintain its status as the portal of Beijing. Tianjin has always been known as a very important city in Northern China. After the Treaties of Tianjin was signed at the end of the Second Opium War, which opened Tianjin to foreign trade, the Eight-Power Allied Forces (England, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, US, Russia and Austria-Hungary) occupied Tianjin. The soldiers of the allied armies considered football the king of sports. Accordingly, the English and French boasted of having the best players, and therefore, they were the ones who built stadiums and organized football games in Tianjin. Gradually, more and more local people became interested in this exciting game. The natives started to play football themselves, with ultimately students from Tianjin’s private religious schools acting as the trailblazers for the sport. Later, with more people getting involved in football, and more teams competing against each other, Tianjin football eventually developed into a very competitive force in China, ranking among the top 4 teams along with Hongkong, Guangdong and Shanghai. After the People’s Republic of China was founded, “tremendous changes” were the words of the day. Just like everything else in China, Tianjin football had also taken on a new look. In 1953, three young players, Zhang Junxiu, Sun Baorong and Wang Jinfeng were selected by the Chinese national team. Thus, they became the first three Tianjin players on the Chinese national football team. In 1957, Tianjin won its first national championship in the “National Youth Football Championship Series,” which turned over a new leaf in the history of Tianjin football. From 1957 to 1989, Tianjin won 16 championships and 15 runner-ups in all sorts of matches nationwide. With their first trip to the Soviet Union in 1958, they had visited 16 different counties and played 103 games overseas by 1989. By 1994, Chinese football took its first step towards the professional level. Under the leading of the Coach Lin Xinjiang, the Tianjin team successfully advanced from the secondary league to the top league. Unfortunately, however, they fell back into the secondary league 3 years later in 1997, which was a great shock to this traditional football city. After this painful experience, the people of Tianjin decided to rebuild their club. The two former teams of Samsung and Vanke were combined to build a new club “TEDA” (Tianjin Economic and Technology Development Area). Finally, Tianjin TEDA went undefeated in the 1998 season, once again sending their team to the top league. Today, Tianjin football has developed into a force which has received the attention of the football world. In the past 40 years, more than 50 national team players have come from Tianjin, and Tianjin is especially well-known for its supply of superior goalkeepers. In August 2004, Tianjin TEDA’s new home stadium “TEDA Football Stadium” was completed. It is a world-class professional football stadium which has a capacity of 36,000. The stadium provides excellent views of the playing field from any angle. This year, Tianjin TEDA finished 6th in the Chinese Super League standings, the same place as last year. Although they did not improve in the standings, their growth throughout the season has been apparent. If they can be more aggressive in front of their opponents’ penalty area, they will most likely find themselves atop the league table sooner rather than later.
